Jack, thanks. I liked your skepticism of the long-term availability of specific items on the internet. So here’s my question. How long are articles from Metro Pulse scheduled to still be available on the metropulse.com site?

Good Stuff here. I too remember CityTimes thirty years ago. I was substitute teaching, working the loading dock at night and writing for Hennemann. I believe that’s how he spelled his name. I was getting published in the same magazine as Jim Dykes, had finally gotten to the point where Doug would let me write stuff I wanted, GOT THE BACK PAGE COLUMN in the issue he finally realized UT football was a major driver in this town and was sure my ship had come in and the future was mine for the taking. I got an invitation, which I accepted, and ran into my eighth grade English teacher who was the paper salmon fixing to get canned over getting stiffed on a thirty-thousand dollar credit on glossy magazine paper. I’ve still got copies of the proof of the final magazine around here somewhere. Still working the loading dock. Still get along better with the guys at the Union Hall than I do with the stewards. Should we meet, I’ll be happy to buy you a beer if I have the money, which, generally, I don’t. But if I don’t, I’ll wish I did and hopefully that will do. Keep up the good work.

So glad to see you blogging since we cannot pick up a Metro Pulse this week. I was just joking with Coury a few weeks ago about coming back to work at Metro Pulse. I am moving back to town and came in to see Kevin about the possibility of getting my old desk back when Coury made the joke that everyone always comes back. It was my favorite place to work and though I wasn’t a writer, I felt like I was part of something that made a difference to the community and loved our quirky little MP family.
Knoxville now has a gaping hole left wide open by the loss of our weekly alt paper. It’s a void that needs to be filled quickly, as I agree with your assessment, I do not believe out ‘Scruffy’ little city would be what it is today without Metro Pulse. And I’m so glad you mentioned Matthew Everett… He, knowingly or unknowingly, introduced me to several musicians and bands I have enjoyed following through the years.
I hope to be a part of whatever we can do to help grow a new alt weekly in the area. In the meantime, I look forward to keeping up with you here and hope some other MP alumni will follow suit.

Please give Sam our thanks as well. I have no fears that your abilities will continue to take you wherever you want to go, so there will be no limp handshake from me when we meet again. I think I speak for many when I say that we will be happy just to check-in and get your perspective on things from time to time and that I appreciate all that you have done and will continue to do for the community. Metro Pulse will rise again, even if it takes a village, but in the mean time, I hope other former staffers follow your lead and continue to do what they did. Even if it starts in pieces, it will find its whole again someday.
